Client guide
Hosting & domains — simpler than it sounds.
A plain-spoken guide to what a website actually needs to stay live, who owns what, and what it costs year to year.
1. The domain name
This is your address on the web — like yourbusiness.co.uk. Think of it like a shop sign: you rent the sign once a year, but it points people to your premises.
- I register it in your name, so you own it.
- Renewals are paid yearly, usually £10–£20 for a .co.uk or .com.
- If you already own one, we can point it at the new site.
2. The hosting
Hosting is the computer space where your website lives. It's what makes the site load when someone types in your domain.
- Fast, secure hosting included in the care plan or set up at cost.
- SSL certificate included — the padlock in the browser bar.
- Backups and updates handled so you don't have to think about it.
Ownership
It's your property.
I set everything up so that you hold the keys. If we ever part ways, the website, domain and accounts go with you.
Yearly costs
What to budget after launch.
Domain & hosting
£100–£300 per year
Paid at cost, in your name. If you already have a domain or host, I'll work with what you've got.
Pay-as-you-go edits
£35 per half hour
Text changes, new photos, a new price list — send it over and I'll do it, billed by the time it takes.
Care plan
from £50 per month
Regular updates, backups, small content changes and a check that everything still works. Optional, cancel any time.
At launch
How it gets switched on.
01
Register domain
I buy the domain in your name, or we reuse one you already own.
02
Set up hosting
The site is deployed to fast, secure hosting with SSL enabled.
03
Point the domain
Your domain is connected to the hosting so visitors see the site.
04
Hand over logins
You get a short note with every account, login and renewal date.
Still unsure? That's normal.
Most clients don't want to become experts in DNS or hosting — they just want a website that works and someone to call if it doesn't. That's exactly what I handle.
Common worry
"What if I get stuck with something technical after the site goes live?"
You won't be left on your own. Every site includes launch support, and you can choose pay-as-you-go edits or a monthly care plan for peace of mind.
